| Abstract: | A recent report on corpus linguistics suggests that "variety of text" may be the area where modern corpus studies can make their "most significant contributions" (Johansson 1991:306). It is possible that those of us in the field of second language teaching have something to gain by applying the techniques of corpus linguistics to the study of the varieties of English of most interest to us, viz. learner Englishes. The objective of the study reported here is to determine to what extent teachers and researchers of EFL can extract meaningful empirical data through applying these techniques to learner corpora. |
