| Abstract: | This paper reports some findings from a preliminary investigation of difficulties encountered by students at HKUST in listening to and comprehending academic lectures. Of particular interest was the extent to which lexical ignorance might affect our students' success in listening. The main purpose of the investigation was to gain broad insights into the difficulties faced by EAP listeners at HKUST. It was hoped that this would lead to the formulation of hypotheses that could be tested more thoroughly at a later date. |
