| Abstract: | This chapter discusses the energy-absorption mechanisms of a class of cellular textile composites in macro and meso scales. An ideal cell configuration was proposed based on experimental observations and theoretical analysis. The effects of geometric parameters on the energy-absorbing capacity were investigated, leading to an optimal design of the cell geometry and cell distribution. Both elastic and rigid-plastic deformation models were formulated to describe the deformation process of a flat-topped conical cell, and to predict its load-displacement and energy dissipation characteristics. Comparisons showed that the theoretical predictions agree well with the experimental results. |
