Abstract: Whilst the communicative approach to language teaching has added to the quantification quandaries associated with assessment, it has nevertheless provided refreshing and useful insights into the process of learning a language. The increased emphasis on learner performance has prompted a reassessment of the central role of the teacher as a source of learning.
