Abstract: Reading is a very important language skill in an environment where English is used as a second or foreign language (Carrell 1988:1). In Hong Kong, advanced level students are required to use the language for academic purposes. They have to read extensively, as almost all textbooks and reference books are written in English. This paper reports on a study I conducted with 91 form 6 students (aged 17-18) in two Hong Kong secondary schools, with the aim of improving their ability in identifying the formal schemata of expository texts, a genre which is commonly used in academic materials.
