| Abstract: | The findings and results of a two-phase program to develop technology for the abatement of particulates emitted from diesel vehicles are reported in this document. Phase I of the study was the abatement of vehicular diesel particulates using water-emulsified fuel. An additive, water, was added to the fuel and emulsified to form 2μm droplets, the resulting mixture promoted combustion in the engine. Up to 15% of water was used, and a reduction in particulate emission and fuel savings were achieved. The work was carried out on an engine testbed and road tests were also conducted. About 35% reduction in particulates generated by a passenger sedan during actual road conditions was achieved by modifying the fuel, and 10 - 68% in testbed studies depending on the operating conditions. This translates into about 3 and 8% improvement in fuel economy for testbed and road test, respectively. No abnormal piston wear was experienced after 300 hours or equivalent to 15,000 km of accumulated operation of the engine testbed.
In the second phase of the project, a catalytic incineration trap was used to collect the remaining particulates in the tailgas and microwave hearting was employed to burn off the particulates. |
