Issue Date: 1996

Abstract: I examine three major problems encountered in the design of optical microscopes for probing beneath the surface of biological tissues. A prototype microscope that incorporates new methods for solving these problems is shown to be capable of resolving micrometer-size structures at depths up to 1.5 mm in living skin.
