| Abstract: | This thesis is an in-depth study of Li Panlong's literary theory, the anthologies of Chinese poetry he compiled, as well as the poetry he had written himself. It also considers Li's influences on the later ages in the context of the Ming Neo-Classicism from a perspective of canonization of Chinese poetry, which attempts to provide a new approach to the study of Li Panlong's poetics and creations.
The first Chapter begins with the relationship between Li Panlong's poetics and that of his predecessors, the Neo-Classicists of an earlier era of the same dynasty. It goes onto examine his life and the formation of his literary thought. The methodology, purposes and approach of this thesis are also presented in this introductory chapter. Li Panlong's poetics, anthologies and his own works are the three main components in his effort in the establishment of poetic canons. They interact with each other and supplement and explain each other. Chapters two, three and four examine these three components respectively, and elaborate on their interactions.
The significance of Li Panlong's canonization of poetry lies not only in his contribution to the establishment of Chinese poetic canons, but also in its influence on the poetics and compilations of poetic anthologies of later ages. Chapter five discusses the profound and lasting influence of Li Panlong's canonization of poetry on the poets in the period from late Ming to mid Qing. Chapter six concludes this thesis and makes an overall evaluation of the successes and shortcomings of Li Panlong's attempt at canonization of poetry. |
