Abstract: It is argued that the role of universities is becoming increasingly important as the foundation and a key player of national innovation systems. In addition to their very important role in the education and training of human resources, universities are expected to undertake research to international standards of excellence, with a degree of focus on areas of strategic importance to their regional economy. Universities must work in partnership with the public and private sectors to facilitate knowledge diffusion, transfer intellectual property and technology, and foster entrepreneurship in a manner that will lead to quality jobs, economic development and wealth creation for the region.
