| Abstract: | It is well known that growth of micro-organisms or macrofouling matters on the submerged parts of a structure may have detrimental effects on their operation and their corrosion rate.
A method of preventing fouling of aquatic surfaces by organisms is invented. It does not contaminate the environment to the extent contamination occurred using previous anti-fouling methods. It concerns a bacterial product with antifouling properties against larvae of dominant marine fouling organisms which therefore avoids such organisms from blooming on surfaces with these compounds. In suspension culture, this bacterium releases compounds of high molecular weight that can be harvested by ultrafiltration. This high molecular weight fraction exhibits prominent antifouling activity against fouling organisms on global scale. The antifouling effect has been demonstrated to be non-toxic to the target organisms and is reversible in the absence of the agent. |
