Title: The failure analysis of FRP strengthened concrete beam

Abstract: The deterioration of flexural beams in service is combined with the need of retrofitting. The state-of-art retrofitting technology involves the use of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) plate, which is bonded to the tension face of the concrete beam for flexural strengthening. During the loading process, the flexural crack induced debonding of FRP plate from the concrete substrate will occur, which leads to the peeling off of FRP plate and hence the failure of the strengthened system. Therefore, the appropriate understanding of the debonding mechanism and associated mechanics is essential for the effective application of the strengthening technique with FRP plate. In this thesis, three topics related to the FRP debonding are studied: 1) the relationship between the interfacial bond strength and material parameters; 2) the coupled effect of the propagation of flexural and interfacial crack on the load carrying capacity of the strengthened system and 3) 'multiple crack effect' on the debonding behavior of FRP plate.
