| Abstract: | From the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, Shanghai was a big industrial and commercial city, a magnet for merchants from around the country and for peasants seeking work. Shanghai was also a leading place in the development of different cultural product. Cartoons was one of a new popular media and represented the new taste of this period.
Ye qianyu was a young and successful cartoonist in Republican China and Shanghai Sketch (1928 -1930) was the first base to develop his career. In this time, he attempted to develop different genre of cartoons, including fashion, nakedness, lyric and a very famous work: Mr. Wang. In this thesis, I try to examine his works in this period from a historical perspective. I am not only try to review his works, find out the cultural meaning, but also try to find out the faces of his readers and their reading habit. |
