Abstract: The “Writing and Speaking through the Curriculum Program” (WSC) began as a “pilot project” in the spring semester of 2000. Initially, the HKUST School of Business and Management (SBM) wanted to emphasize the importance of English language skills among its undergraduate students through a “content-based approach”. With this objective in mind, therefore, SBM requested assistance as well as expertise from the Language Center (LC). As a jointly coordinated program, the WSC is administered by the LC, with assistance provided by SBM in terms of faculty and student participation. Under the management of the Language Center, the primary objective of the work carried out by the WSC team is to help undergraduate SBM students further enhance their English language communication skills by working directly with SBM subject professors. In an effort to achieve this broad objective, WSC staff work with faculty from all six departments of the School of Business and Management on a single content-based short written assignment.
