Summary This work focuses on the relationship between carbon fibre-Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) interphase microstructures which are affected by processing conditions and the corresponding mechanical properties. The bulk and interphase crystalline morphology were characterised by polarised light microscopy. The degree of crystallinity of bulk composite laminates was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) techniques. Single fibre pull-out tests were performed to measure the interphase shear strength (IFSS) and characterise the interphase failure processes. It was found that the crystallinity itself has little influence on the IFSS, but strongly affects the failure process at the interphase region.
