Summary We have carried out a comprehensive study on the photoionization and fragmentation of Cr(CO)<sub>6</sub> by using the time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) technique with a synchrotron radiation source in the spectral region of 300-1600 A. Parent ion Cr(CO)<sub>6</sub><sup>+</sup> and its CO- elimination fragment ions Cr(CO)<sub>n</sub><sup>+</sup>(n=0-5), the carbides CrC<sup>+</sup> and CrC(CO)<sup>+</sup> and the doubled charged ions Cr(CO)<sub>n</sub><sup>2+</sup>(n=1-3) were produced.
