Summary Early in this century, the teaching of English literature to non-native students was largely concerned with the classics of English literature. The assumption was that this offered students exposure to the best uses of English. However, in recent times, there has been a general decline in the prestige of English literature as a component of the EFL syllabus, with some language teaching theories drawing attention to the inadequacies of literature-based methods in promoting the acquisition of language skills.
