Summary Carbon nanotubes have been helically wrapped in soluble polyphenylacetylene (PPA) chains by in situ polymerization of phenylacetylene in the presence of the nanotubes. The PPAs containing thickly-wrapped short nanotubes(NT/PPAs) are soluble in common organic solvents. Shearing the NT-PPA solutions readily aligns the nanotubes along the shear direction. The NT-PPA solutions limit intense optical pulses and the saturation fluence is tunable by varying the nanotube contents.
