2.4GHz ISM band antenna for PC cards

Summary The recent development of wireless communication has been very rapid and the use of the 2.4GHz ISM band for communication is becoming an important means of wireless communication. Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), wireless printers and the planned potential applications based on these technologies are possible in the further and therefore the development of cost effective transceiver designs is important. Traditionally the RF front-end has been designed separately from the antenna in these systems. In essence the design of each treats the other as a block box with a 50ohm transmission line interface. In this thesis we investigate the advantages THAT can be had by designing the antenna and RF front-end together. Potential areas which can be combined are filtering, noise performance, differential operation and pattern shape. In the thesis, we try to perform antenna design that is in itself an integral part of the overall system optimization. Three compact antennas, namely Dual PIFA, L PIFA and Parasitic Dipole, are proposed for ISM Band communication. Results and findings on filter integration, optimal noise matching, far field patterns, bandwidth enhancement and differential operation are presented. Beneath the classic requirements which the antenna has to fulfill, such as size constrain and efficiency, new criteria are considered in order to design a tailor-made antenna for WLAN.
